Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

After graduating from dental school, oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete an additional four to seven years of training that focus on advanced surgical procedures for the head and neck.

After graduating from dental school, periodontists complete an additional two years of training that focus on the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and surgical procedures such as grafts and implant placement.

After graduating from dental school, endodontists complete an additional two years of training that focus on complex root canals and other procedures centered around saving teeth.

After graduating from dental school, prosthodontists complete an additional three years of training to specialize in the fabrication of prostheses involving advanced techniques. Prosthodontists also may work with patients that suffer from cleft palate, ectodermal dysplasia, and other conditions that affect the mouth and teeth.

After graduating from dental school, pediatric dentists complete an additional two years of training that focus on sedation techniques, advanced procedures for children with severe decay, treating patients with special needs, etc.

Orthodontist

After graduating from dental school, orthodontists complete an additional two years of training that focus on preventing and treating the following: dental crowding, simple tooth straightening, bite correction, airway management, and working with oral surgeons on cases that require orthognathic surgery, etc. Using braces, retainers, and other appliances, orthodontists not only help straighten your teeth, they also help correct the way your jaws line up.
